Forage productivity and soil properties in dual?purpose cover crop systems

چکیده

Intensification of dryland cropping systems with cover crops (CCs) in the semi-arid central Great Plains could enhance soil health and diversify production when used for forage. This study was conducted from 2015 to 2020 determine forage mass, nutritive value CCs, effects dual-purpose CCs on properties a no-till winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]–fallow system. Treatments were oat (Avena sativa L.)/triticale (× Triticosecale Wittm.) grown place fallow, which hayed, grazed by yearling heifers, or left standing. Forage mass varied across years averaged 3,546 kg ha?1 standing CCs. Hayed removed 73 26% available Soil bulk density unaffected haying grazing compared organic carbon (SOC) stocks 0-to-15-cm depth 2019 similar among CC treatments (27.31 Mg ha?1). Stocks hayed greater than fallow (24.79 ha?1) However, 2020, less (21.80 (24.27 all fallow. Mean weight diameter water stable aggregates increased (2.89 mm) (1.67 both but 1 yr. Findings suggest can replace produce high-quality while improving residue management is critical productivity low.

Biochar: Effects on Crop Productivity and Soil Properties

World food security is under challenge to a great extent due to effects of climate change, continued population growth and resource-depleting practices on agriculture (IAASTD, 2009). Presently poor farmers use either organic manure or inorganic fertilizers (Mando et al., 2005; Topoliantz et al., 2005) for maintaining soil fertility as they cannot afford to apply fertilizers as a nutrient source...

Crop/Forage/Soil Management/Grassland Utilization

For the long-term sustainability of the dairy industry in the Northeastern USA, manure nutrient application rates should not exceed crop nutrient removal once aboveoptimum soil fertility levels are reached. Impacts of gypsum and winter cover crops on soil physical properties and crop productivity when irrigated with saline water

Reuse of saline subsurface drainage water for irrigation has been identi®ed as a potential option for managing drainage volumes and sustaining crop productivity in California's San Joaquin Valley. Soil surface structural instability, crusting and poor stand establishment may, however, be constraints in drainage reuse systems. The objective of this ®eld study was to evaluate the effectiveness of...

Soil Physical Properties and Crop Productivity of an Eroded Soil Amended with Cattle Manure

Erosion changes soil properties, especially physical properties, mainly because it removes surface soil rich in organic materials and exposes lower soil layers. In 1988, a study was established to determine the effects of soil erosion and long-term manure applications on selected soil phys ical properties and corn (Zea mays L.) production. After 10 years of an nual manure applications, soil c...

Soil Microbial Substrate Properties and Microbial Community Responses under Irrigated Organic and Reduced-Tillage Crop and Forage Production Systems

Changes in soil microbiotic properties such as microbial biomass and community structure in response to alternative management systems are driven by microbial substrate quality and substrate utilization. We evaluated irrigated crop and forage production in two separate four-year experiments for differences in microbial substrate quality, microbial biomass and community structure, and microbial ...
